The G2 is a fantastic tool, but it is critical that you understand what it is designed to do as it is far from a conventional tripod head. If you don’t consider yourself a tripod nerd, then this product probably isn’t for you.

The G2 is a centered geared head. Normal heads allow compositional adjustments by allowing rotation of the camera, with the center of the ball as the rotation point. As the radius between the rotation point and camera is quite big, when changing composition, the point of view changes drastically. For those obsessed with perfect composition, this is unacceptable. With centered heads, the camera moves in an arc, which if completed, would make a virtual circle around the camera, the center point of which should be the focal plane of the image, meaning that your point of view remains identical regardless of how you change the composition. In short – with a normal ball head, the camera moves around the head. With centered heads, the head moves around the camera. The downside of centered heads is that in order to provide a large movement range, the head has to be massive, so a compact centered head like the G2 will have a limited range of movement.

At 360g and 60mm diameter by 60mm height, it is as compact and travel friendly as geared heads can be. Finely geared X- and Y- axes offer precise geared adjustment of your composition, but in a limited range of 10 degrees up or down on each axis. By combing the two axes, a range of about 15 degrees is achievable, which is sufficient for most uses.

Panoramic Use – A panning axis at the top allows panoramas with a central horizon. Doing panoramas with an off-center horizon requires another panoramic axis below the head, which can be added by mounting the G2 on the RH-2L panning clamp.

Pairing with Ranger Leveling Legs

The G2 paired with one of the Ranger CEX leveling legs and a panning clamp is an unlikely combination, but it is arguably the ultimate traveling panoramic setup. Offering instant leveling with geared and centered compositional ability for single- or multi-row panos. The leveling base also adds an extra 15 degrees of movement range to the G2, which opens up the extreme angles when you really need them. You can even add the NR-140 or NR-200 nodal slides and it will still be under 2kg.

G2 (360g) + RH-2L (105g) + LS-285CEX (1350g) = 1815g

Model naming

Leofoto tripod heads come in a diverse range of styles, sizes and clamp variations. Understanding the naming convention for each of the models is probably the easiest way to understand what each one does.

Choosing Leofoto

LH Heads

Low profile design offers many advantages over normal ball heads; simpler internal design, lower center of gravity, improved stiffness, greater ball-cup contact area, to name a few.

Choose your size

The range starts with the diminutive LH-25 with a tiny 25mm ball through to the large LH-55 with its 55mm ball. Our absolute favourite is the LH-40 as it features large ribbed control knobs, without being too heavy or expensive.

The LH-55 is an oversized head for super tele lenses or large format cameras. The LH-36 is an ideal size for those shooting with APS-C cameras or light full frame setups. The LH-30 and LH-25 are great for MFT and compact camera options or for people who hike a lot and count every gram that they pack.

Choose your clamp

Most of the LH size options are also available in a range of different clamps. If you like simplicity and price is a major factor, stick to the standard screw clamp. For those who can afford it, a lever release clamp makes the operation of the head a dream. A panning clamp is great for panorama shooting, but it does add weight and make the head more complicated, so avoid it if you're not someone for gadgets.

Choosing Leofoto

Plates and L-Brackets

Making sure that your camera or lens connects optimally to the tripod is critical. All tripod heads include one standard plate, however, If you have more than one camera or you need to mount a lens to a tripod, then you'll need extra plates.
