Laowa 2x Macro – Simple Optical Perfection. Laowa's range of 2:1 macro lenses are steadily securing a reputation as the gold standard in glass for the macro world. These lenses offer class-leading optical performance, magnification and price by foregoing autofocus and stabilisation; systems that are seldom used in serious macro photography.

At first glance, the range might seem confusing, but it is actually very simple. Of the six lenses in the 2x range, 4 are basically the same lens, but for different mounts and sensor sizes.

Two additional 2x lenses were introduced in 2022, both for full frame mirrorless. A much smaller and lighter version of the 90mm and a much wider 58mm.

Features

  • Incredible Sharpness, Corner to Corner – Laowa's goal from the outset has always been to keep their lenses simple and focus on perfect optics. Their 2x macro lenses deliver class-leading sharpness across the frame, even at 2x magnification, which is a big part of what has made these lenses so popular.
  • Apochromatic Optics  – All of Laowa's 2x macro lenses feature 3x low-dispersion elements to keep chromatic abberation to an absolute minimun in both in-focus and out-of-focus areas.
  • Beautiful Bokeh  – Building on the importance of out-of-focus areas, the 2x lenses all feature a 13-blade iris design that delivers beautiful soft bokeh and round highlights.
  • Internal Focusing  – The 2:1 magnification requires a massive travel distance of lens elements, but this all happens internally to ensure that a skittish subject might not be disturbed.
  • Built like a Tank  – The first thing you'll notice when you pick up a Laowa lens is the feel - their lenses are built for outdoor use and are without a doubt some of the most indestructible lenses in the industry.

World’s first lens with 2:1 magnification & APO design for M4/3 cameras

Maximum 2x Magnification

Unlike most of the MFT macro lenses in the market which can focus only up to 1X, the new Laowa 50mm macro lens offers a 2X maximum magnification ratio along with a minimum focusing distance of 5.3” (13.5cm). It is the first lens ever designed with a 2X magnification for MFT cameras.

Photographers can take advantage of the extended magnification range to tackle all kinds of photography scenarios. The lens can focus to infinity and serve as an excellent portrait lens with its 100mm equivalent field of view on 35mm sensors.

Automatic Aperture

Being equipped with a CPU chip and motor, the aperture can be adjusted via the camera body. The focus magnifier would automatically be enabled, when rotating the focus ring, for easier focus control. The lens data can also be recorded on EXIF.

Apochromatic optical (APO) design

An apochromatic (APO) design has been adopted and therefore the chromatic aberration at both in-focus and out-of-focus areas are controlled to the minimal in its class. It greatly improves the sharpness, clarity and colour accuracy of photos.

Compact & Light

The 50mm lens is extremely compact and light in weight. It measures 3.1” (79mm) long and weighs only around 8.4oz (240g). It would be the perfect set up for outdoor shooting.

Optimised for Micro Four Thirds cameras

With the success of the Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x Ultra macro APO launched earlier for APS-C cameras, the new 50mm lens is specially developed for MFT mirrorless camera users and it can be used on MFT cameras from Panasonic, Olympus, BMPCC 4K, etc.

We have a no-nonsense approach. If a product breaks due to a manufacturer defect, we will replace it without asking any questions. If we have any reason to believe that the product was put through unreasonably heavy usage, we will have to follow the manufacturer's standard warranty procedure.

NiSi Care & Use

F-stop Care & Use

Leofoto

The manufacturer offers a 10-year limited warranty on all products and we extend that warranty to our customers. Please read the below very carefully, so you understand your position when something breaks or doesn’t work ideally anymore.

It is critical to understand that this warranty only applies to factory faults and not to standard wear and tear. Tripods are subject to a lot of gray areas in this regard as tripods used outdoors, particularly in sand and sea water, are subjected to extreme wear and tear. We will e.g. replace the affected part of your tripod if a carbon tube snaps or cracks without much pressure applied to it or if the apex breaks. We will not replace your tripod or the affected part if e.g. a joint locks up due to sand or salt build up or if a hinge becomes corroded or stiff/floppy and unserviceable due to corrosion or salt build up.

In sum, if we see that you took good care of your tripod and something went wrong, we will go out of our way to fix or replace it for you. If we see that you dragged it through the mud (literally or metaphorically), then we are unlikely to fix/replace it for you. How you handle your tripod and take care of it, is all the difference between 3- or 20 years of service.

The best of tripods will not last longer than 2/3 years if used regularly in the sea, INCORRECTLY, and never serviced. Always make sure to extend the lowest leg section first, so you keep the joints out of the water/sand. Always rinse with freshwater after use in the sea, wipe down with a wet cloth, leave extended to dry and ENSURE YOU KEEP THE HEAD AND APEX DRY. If your tripod’s joints start feeling sandy/gritty, open them up, give them a proper clean and lubrication and fine-tune the tension on the joints.

If travelling on dirt roads, ensure that your tripod is in its carry-bag when not in use.

Your tripod will not take care of itself – it is up to you to do so. All our tripods ship with an info-sheet on taking care of your tripod. We also offer a full tripod disassembly and service for R1000, including shipping both ways.
