The 70L Sukha is the 2nd largest of the range and can be used for a multi-day adventure in the wilderness, to comfortably carry half a studio around or as the ultimate backpack for super-telephoto setups.

Wildlife Photography

Co-developed with the Tele Master ICU, the Sukha allows safe, easy and comfortable carrying of super-telephoto setups. The Tele Master ICU accepts anything up to a 800mm lens mounted on a probody with enough space for additional bodies, lenses and accessories. It also features top access that allows you to remove or stow your camera and lens in seconds with the bag in an upright position. This combination is the ultimate solution for safely shooting on game-drive vehicles or travelling through airports with telephoto setups.

General Photography

If paired with an XL Pro ICU, the Sukha can accept an absolute ton of gear with space to spare for additional accessories. Whether it's clothing and food for a day-trek or studio accessories for an outdoor portrait shoot. If you like carrying half a studio around, this is the bag for you.

Wilderness Hiking

If paired with a Small Pro ICU or Medium Slope ICU, the Sukha becomes the ultimate camera backpack for serious adventurers. This combination will comfortably accept one body, 3 lenses and accessories in the ICU, leaving ample space for several days of hiking gear, food and clothing in the rest of the shell. We recommend this shell paired with a Small Pro ICU for treks of up to 3 days.

We do not recommend that you load f-stop backpacks heavier than 18kg. The opening backpanel design does not transfer heavy loads as efficiently as normal hiking backpacks and will lead to discomfort. For hikes of more than 3 nights or if loading the backpack over 18kg, we strongly advise you stick to premium hiking backpacks with proper hip- and back padding like Osprey or Dueter.

Carry-On Compliance

The Sukha is a good 13cm longer and a few cm deeper than the allowed carry-on size (56x36x23), so it is not very airport friendly. If you are comfortable with the ‘it’s camera gear’ excuse and arguing with airport staff, then you’ll be fine and we do have plenty of customers who fly with it frequently. It comfortably fits in the overhead lockers of domestic haul planes like the Airbus A320-300, but often in it’s length, so you’ll need almost an entire locker for yourself. You will struggle to get it into the overhead lockers of Airlink’s Embraers if you’re flying around Southern Africa.

ICU Compatibility

The Tilopa can handle a wide variety of ICU's depending on how much camera gear you want to carry and how much of the main compartment you want available for other items like clothing, food or whatever it is you like taking on a shoot. Keep in mind that all Mountain Series shells have a large top-, front- and two side pockets in addition to the main compartment. Always make sure you tighten the compression straps to trim down your backpack’s profile, tuck in all loose straps and belts and try not to let the airport staff see your backpack.

  • The XL Pro ICU is a comfortable fit, but it leaves just enough space in the main compartment for some clothing and snacks.
  • The Large Pro ICU is a very good fit, leaving about 40% of the main compartment available for some other gear.
  • The Small Pro and Medium ICU's occupy about 20-30% of the main compartment, leaving plenty of space for other gear.

Multipurpose internal sleeve fits up to a 15” laptop.

Why are f-stop Gear products so expensive in SA?

People like to jump to the conclusion that it is because someone in the local supply chain is making a lot of money, but unfortunately for us, that is not the case. *Photo by Brendon Wainwright

The real answer is import duty.

Virtually all backpacks or backpack systems are subject to a whopping 30% import tax. These taxes are supposed to protect local manufacturers by giving them a competitive edge against the rest of the globe. It works well to protect local businesses and jobs, but unfortunately in a situation like this, where there is no local competition for a product like fstop gear, it just enriches the tax collector.

If you consider the cost of the Tilopa in America at $319, you can calculate the correlating local price by multiplying it by x1.45 (15% VAT + 30% import duty).

$319*US price x 1.45*tax = $462
$462 x R14.50*exchange rate = R6 700
Our price R5 999

*based on prices and exchange rate as June 2019

If we took the approach of ‘screw the consumer, we deserve the same margin as other countries’, we would price the Tilopa at R6700 (our price is R5999). Luckily we’re not greedy and we’re incredibly passionate about the brand, so we sacrifice a huge chunk of our margin in order to try and keep the product affordable, despite the local taxes.

We know it’s tempting to buy it in the US and have it shipped here, but you will be slapped with the same 45% taxes when it has to go through customs. It is also worth noting that in a small market like SA, importers have smaller margins because we cannot benefit from the economy of scale as similar brands can in the large first world markets.

We barely scrape a profit on this brand - we import it because like most photographers, we tried multiple bags from multiple brands and hated every single one. Fstop gear is the only company that makes a comfortable, practical, high quality backpack for adventurous photographers.
